Day 1 of College Football 2007 Season

Ahhh, the sweet sweet feeling of college footbal coursing through my veins once again. The drought is over, my parched and starving body is feeling the nourishment as my heart pounds the goodness through my body...

Day 1 is history, and of note:

LSU blew the doors off of Mississippi State. Not that surprising, as they do have perhaps the best defense in the country and MSU's offense is, well, offensive. But that was embarrassing. You can't help but be deflated if you're an MSU fan after ESPN went to such great lengths to hype up Croom's fourth season as the one in which he turns the corner. I for one think that he will be gone by year end. Their quarterback has no poise, and the playcalling was atrocious. And he left him in there for 6, yes 6, interceptions. For god's sake, spare the kid. They were overmatched from the first play. Granted, LSU is a really good team, exceptional in fact. But wow. They got blasted on their home field in a nationally televised game. This will be a very long season indeed for the MSU hopefuls.

Iowa State got beat by Kent State. That is not a typo. New coach, new schemes, I get it, but Kent f***ing State??? c'mon. Anyway, we'll see what Chizik does with this team. But that was not the way you want to stumble out of the blocks. On the other hand, it certainly elevates the attention level in practice. It will be interesting to see how this team responds. Do they have the character? Actually, I don't care at all about Iowa State. I'm still bitter about the 1991 game against Rice when my Owls completely pissed away a lead in the 4th quarter by fumbling the ball with 1:40 to go, letting Iowa State score to win by 1. Would have had my picture in the damn paper the next day!!!!! Anyway....

What else -- The big boys rolled. LSU wasn't the only one who dominated. Louisville, Rutgers and Boise State all clobbered their opponents. Oregon St. won 24-7 over Utah. I didn't watch this game, but Utah didn't muster much offense from what I could see. Not that they are great, but respectable and oh by the way, didn't they just have an undefeated season a couple few years ago? I thought so. It appears that when your starting QB separates his shoulder, you kind of create problems in your passing game. The 2nd string guy was pretty ineffective... not good.
